Trauma
Trauma can overwhelm your ability to cope, disrupt your sense of safety and trust in yourself and others, and leave lasting emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical scars. It can result from a wide range of experiences, including but not limited to abuse, neglect, violence, accidents, natural disasters and loss.
Navigating the Aftermath
Experiencing trauma can lead to a myriad of symptoms and challenges. These may include flashbacks, nightmares, hyper-vigilance, anxiety, depression, mood swings, substance abuse and difficulty forming and maintaining healthy relationships. These symptoms can result in trauma responses.
How you might be feeling...
Trauma responses are ways in which you react or cope with experiences of trauma. They can vary widely from person to person and can manifest in physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral ways. You may feel irritable, have difficulty relaxing or sleeping and may be hyper-vigilant for potential threats. Or, you may feel detached from your emotions, memories, or surroundings. You may experience flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories. Trauma responses are not always immediate and can develop over time.
